Welcome to 2017's tandem ride. We climb on the bike in just a few weeks and are just getting ramped up with the blog. Our ride doesn't officially start until July 1, ish, and there is a lot of ground to cover and work to be done between now and then, but we are getting excited to get going. We're staying domestic this year since we want to be back in Central Oregon in time for the eclipse -- I hear that there's a big party planned in our pasture. Come on down if you want, but bring your tent.
It seems as though our annual multi-week rides are becoming one of the main things that keep us sane in our too busy lives. The planning, making sure the bike is in good shape, and trying to get ourselves in shape. It is all a good balance for the other things that we do. We hope that you have some time to armchair ride along with us this year and that you enjoy the ride.
Here's an interactive map that shows our overall route, at least what we are planning right now.
It has been a cold and wet spring in Central Oregon this year and that has made it hard to get out on the bike as much as we'd like. I guess that we'll ride-into-shape this year...
There are a few things to keep in mind:
a) we'll probably adjust the route on the fly, so to speak, and make changes as we go;
b) the route shows us riding across the Straits of Georgia; that's a big ask on a tandem so no worries, we'll be riding the ferry on those sections; and
c) we will backtrack on several sections since there is only one road available (from the east coast of the island to Tofino and back, from Campbell River to Sayward and back, and from Horseshoe Bay to Whistler and back).
The post for each daily route will include an interactive map showing that day's travels so you can follow the actual route that we take. And we will try to update the blog daily. Our success in doing that depends on things like whether we have access to WiFi, the weather, and perhaps most importantly, if the beer at any particular stop sounds better than working on the blog (in which case the blog will not be published).
We hope that you enjoy this year's trip --we're really looking forward to it!
Cheers.
This year we'll start in Victoria BC, ride up, across and and around Vancouver Island to explore the island as much as possible. We'll then hop over to the mainland where we will visit Vancouver, and from there we will ride north to Whistler on the Sea to Sky Highway. Our trip will conclude with a week or so riding around the Gulf Islands to explore and to visit family and friends.
