Ride Day 3: Lake Cowichan to Nanaimo

There are no (reasonable) roads from the Cowichan Valley west to the coast, so we are turning east and then north to eventually catch the west-leading road to Port Alberni and then to Tofino.  Today we head to the east coast of the island where we expect traffic to pick up considerably.  Tonnage rules!

Once on the east side we head north through Chemainus (where we almost moved oh-so-many years ago but for Camp Sherman), then Ladysmith and on to Nanaimo for our first visit there of the trip.  We'll be back.

Depending on timing and weather and the like, we may take a detour south to the famous Kinsole trestle -- it would be fun to see.

The profile above has a nice trend -- down.  We made great time today in perfect riding weather, if a bit hot when we arrived at the east side of the island.  Sun, a slight breeze, and warm temps.  Not bad.

The traffic is a lot busier on this side of the island and we didn't take too many photos.  Here's a few, starting with last evening on the Cowichan river where we found a swimming hole that was oh-so-nice.

Crofton and the ferry terminal -- our stop for coffee along the way

Chemainus is looking a lot better these days than it did in the 1990s -- same murals, though

Several mills are operating in the Ladysmith area

One of the yacht harbors in Nanaimo.  There are lots of cafes and bars to whet your appetite.

Nanaimo's main harbor is a busy place.

White Sails Brewing in Nanaimo.  Good beer.
We go uphill a bit tomorrow, west to Port Alberni.  The weather continues to look good at least up to the weekend.
